| | Forest Flora Provides guidance for ecological restoration. Ecological restoration is more than planting natives. Ecological restoration aims to restore the processes of dispersal, regeneration, competition and succession in order to ensure success. A successful restoration project will mature, gradually replacing early colonizers with canopy trees and shade tolerant species. As the planted specimens start to regenerate and compete for space they ensure the best adapted species for each site predominates. This ensures maximum use of the resources and minimizes the opportunity for weeds. The benefits of careful planning far outweigh the cost. Every locality and landform has a unique character and a unique plant association. This is part of the character of the land and ecological restoration focuses on preserving that unique character.
Forest Flora offers a total service or you can select the services that compliment your capacity.
- Site visit. Forest Flora will visit the site. A written report is prepared, identifying the native plants naturally on the site, any potential weed problems, and outline the native plants that would have once formed the structure of a self managing ecosystem on that site. The owner, site manager is welcome to accompany us on that visit.
- Restoration plan From the site visit, a comprehensive plan to address problem weeds and progressively establish native vegetation cover is developed.
- Seeds can be collected from your area and propagated to maintain ecological integrity.
- Preparation. Forest Flora can carry out weed control, engage and supervise contractors to do the work or guide the landowner in the pre planting preparation.
- Planting. Forest flora will deliver the plants, lay them out in the most suitable pattern. Larger species, shade, wet, drought and wind intolerant species are all spaced appropriately.
- Releasing and any replacements. This can be done a year after planting, and is a good time to identify any unforeseen threats.
- Project Management Forest Flora provides a total project management service.
- Education Programme Forest Flora provides a short education programme for schools, including an introduction to a local bush or wetland area, collection and propagation of seeds, care of plants and planting a local site. In some cases his may be funded by District or Regional Council.
Forest Flora provides information on which
plants fill different niches within the wider ecosystem. Planting using this
knowledge makes it more likely that the planting will be self regenerating and
become self sufficient more quickly. Click here to view information on different
environment types and the species that tend to grow there. This area also has
information and pictures on each species listed.
