Wayne Bennett and daughter Julia with Trevor
James of Ag Research as they receive the CAWS award for the Most
Weed Wise
Nursery for 2009.
Two awards for the most "Weed
Wise" nursery (one in Australia,
one in New Zealand) are granted annually. The purpose of the awards is
to create awareness and generate positive publicity regarding invasive
garden plants. A very high proportion of serious weeds in Australia and
New Zealand (and in other countries) were introduced as garden
ornamentals. This award is to recognise nurseries that do not
sell well-known invasive garden plants and who support appropriate
labelling schemes and education of customers.
As Wayne comments: "Once upon a time,
weeds were plants which invaded our gardens from the
wilderness around. Nowdays weeds are more likely to be plants from
gardens which
invade what remnants of wilderness there are left."
